Your Colour Journey

01 Preparation = Success

Begin with clean, completely dry hair, free from excessive oils and styling-product buildup. For the brightest results, we recommend a suitable pre-lightened base. Remember, your starting hair colour plays a major role in your final shade. Always perform a skin patch test and strand test before your full application.

02 Mix your Magic

Start with a 1:1 ratio of BOLD pigment powder to conditioner or our specially formulated 2-in-1 Pigment Activator. Looking for something vibrant and intense? Increase your pigment concentration. Feeling a softer, more pastel moment? Add more conditioner. Mix thoroughly until smooth, pop on your gloves and apply evenly to your hair.

03 Rinse, Reveal & Slay

Our original pigment guide recommends approximately 45–60 minutes for processing. Once complete, rinse thoroughly with cool water until the water runs clearer. Avoid shampooing during this initial rinse. Style as desired and prepare for compliments. LOTS of compliments.

Frequently asked questions

Before You Colour
Do I need to bleach or pre-lighten my hair?

Not necessarily! It all depends on the colour you're starting with and the results you're hoping to achieve.

BOLD pigments are semi-permanent, deposit-only colours, meaning they add pigment to your hair but cannot lighten your existing hair colour.

  • For the brightest, most vibrant results, we recommend applying BOLD to a suitably pre-lightened base. The lighter your hair, the more noticeable and true-to-shade your chosen pigment will generally appear.
  • If you have darker hair, you may still achieve a subtle tint or colour reflection, but depending on the colour you choose, you may not receive the colour payoff you see in pictures.

Think of your hair as a canvas ... the colour underneath makes all the difference!

If you're considering bleaching your hair, remember that lightening is a separate chemical process that should be performed carefully, preferably by a qualified professional. If you're dreaming of electric pink or vivid purple, your starting level matters!

What are hair levels, and why do they matter?

Think of your hair level as the starting point for your colourful masterpiece. Ever wondered why the same hair colour looks completely different on two people? Meet hair levels!

Hair levels are a way of measuring how light or dark your hair is, typically on a scale from 1 (black) to 10 (lightest blonde).

  • The level you start with plays a huge role in how your final BOLD colour will turn out.
  • For example, applying a vibrant pink pigment to level 8 blonde hair may produce a bright, noticeable pink, while applying that exact same pigment to level 5 brown hair may create a much darker, subtler result.

Generally, brighter shades and pastels require a lighter starting base to achieve their intended appearance.

The golden rule? Your starting hair colour influences your final result. Knowing your hair level will help you choose shades and set realistic expectations for your colourful transformation.Your canvas changes the artwork!

How do I know what my final colour will look like?

Here's the thing about hair: no two heads are exactly alike!

  • Your final colour depends on several factors, including your starting hair level, existing colour, hair porosity, condition and the concentration of pigment in your mixture.
  • Even two people using the exact same BOLD shade can achieve different results.

That's why we always recommend performing a strand test before committing to a full application.

  • Simply prepare a small amount of your desired colour mixture, apply it to a discreet section of hair, and follow the recommended processing and rinsing instructions.
  • Once dry, assess the colour in natural lighting to see whether it's what you had in mind.

Want something more intense? You may need to adjust your pigment concentration.

Going for something softer? Adding more conditioner may help create a lighter result.

A little experimentation goes a long way.

Should I apply BOLD to wet or dry hair?

Dry hair, please!

For our standard BOLD pigment application, we recommend starting with clean, completely dry hair that's free from excessive oils, heavy styling products and product buildup.

  • Applying your mixture to dry hair helps you work through the sections carefully and distribute the pigment more evenly.
  • Before getting started, make sure you've detangled your hair, divided it into manageable sections and have your protective gloves ready.

And remember: preparation is everything. A little effort before colouring can make your colourful hair adventure a whole lot easier!

Mix & Apply
How much pigment should I mix with conditioner?

This is where the colourful magic begins!

Our recommended starting point is a 1:1 ratio — one part BOLD pigment powder to one part conditioner or BOLD 2-in-1 Pigment Activator.

But here's the fun part: your mixture is customisable!

  • Want a more vibrant, intense colour? Increase the concentration of pigment in your mixture.
  • Prefer something softer or more subtle? Add more conditioner to dilute the pigment.
  • Dreaming of a pastel shade? Start with a smaller concentration of pigment in a larger amount of conditioner, and adjust gradually.

Mix everything thoroughly in a suitable mixing bowl until you have a smooth, evenly coloured consistency without any dry powder remaining.

We recommend starting with a small test batch and performing a strand test before preparing enough mixture for your entire head.

Remember, you're the artist here. Experiment, customise and create a shade that's uniquely YOU!

Do I have to use the BOLD 2-in-1 Pigment Activator?

Not necessarily! But we did create something rather fabulous to complement your BOLD pigments.

Our BOLD 2-in-1 Pigment Activator & Nourishing Conditioner was specially formulated to work alongside our semi-permanent pigment powders.

  • Its creamy consistency helps create a smooth, easy-to-apply colour mixture while conditioning your hair.
  • It's designed to enhance your BOLD colour experience, supporting vibrant colour payoff and leaving your hair feeling soft and nourished.

However, if you don't have our Pigment Activator, you can also mix your BOLD powders with a suitable conditioner. We recommend avoiding conditioners containing added colour pigments or heavy product buildup that could interfere with your desired result.

Bonus: Our 2-in-1 formula doubles as a nourishing conditioner, meaning you can use it on its own between colouring sessions.

Because who doesn't love a product that multitasks?

How do I apply BOLD hair colour?

Ready to bring your colourful vision to life? Here's how!

STEP 1 : PREPARE YOUR HAIR

Start with clean, completely dry hair, free from excess oils and styling products. For the brightest results, we recommend an appropriately pre-lightened base.

Complete your recommended patch and strand tests before your full application.

STEP 2 : MIX YOUR COLOUR

Combine your chosen BOLD pigment with conditioner or our 2-in-1 Pigment Activator, starting with the recommended 1:1 ratio.

Mix thoroughly until your colour is smooth and evenly blended.

STEP 3 : PROTECT & SECTION

Put on protective gloves, cover your clothing with an old towel and protect nearby surfaces from potential staining.

Divide your hair into manageable sections using clips. This makes application easier and helps distribute the colour more evenly.

STEP 4 : APPLY YOUR PIGMENT

Using a tint brush or gloved hands, apply your mixture evenly to your desired sections, ensuring the hair is thoroughly coated.

Whether you're creating an all-over transformation, colourful highlights, an ombré or a bold balayage, this is your moment to get creative!

STEP 5 : LET THE MAGIC HAPPEN

Allow the pigment to process according to your product instructions. Our original BOLD guide recommends approximately 45–60 minutes.

STEP 6 : RINSE & REVEAL

Once processing is complete, rinse thoroughly with cool water until the water runs clearer.

Avoid using shampoo during this initial rinse.

Gently towel-dry your hair using a dark towel, then allow it to air-dry or style with low heat.

And just like that, welcome to your next colourful hair era!

How long should I leave BOLD pigments on my hair?

Good things take time, and colourful hair is no exception!

  • Our standard BOLD pigment instructions recommend allowing approximately 45–60 minutes for the colour to develop after application.
  • This gives your pigment mixture time to deposit colour onto your hair.
  • However, keep in mind that your final result depends on several factors, including your starting hair colour, hair porosity and pigment concentration.

Leaving your mixture on longer doesn't necessarily guarantee a brighter or more intense result.

Always follow the processing instructions supplied with your specific product rather than exceeding the recommended time.

Once processing is complete, rinse your hair thoroughly with cool water until the water runs clearer.

Top tip: Avoid shampooing immediately after application, and use a darker towel to protect against potential colour transfer.

Keep It Vibrant
How do I make my colour last longer?

You've achieved your dream colour. Now, how do you keep it looking fabulous for as long as possible?

Semi-permanent pigments naturally fade with washing, but a few simple changes to your haircare routine can make a noticeable difference.

Here are our favourite colour-saving tips:

  • Turn down the temperature! Hot water can encourage colour to fade faster. Wash your hair with cool or lukewarm water whenever possible.
  • Choose colour-friendly products. Opt for a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo formulated for colour-treated hair. Avoid frequent use of clarifying or deep-cleansing shampoos, as these can accelerate fading.
  • Wash less frequently. Every wash can remove some pigment. Try spacing out your wash days and using dry shampoo between washes when needed.
  • Be gentle with heat styling. Excessive heat from straighteners, curling irons and hairdryers can affect your hair's condition and colour longevity. Use appropriate heat protection and lower temperatures whenever possible.
  • Protect your hair from the elements. Prolonged sun exposure, chlorine and salt water can contribute to fading. Consider protecting your hair when swimming or spending extended periods outdoors.
  • Keep your hair conditioned. Colour-treated hair benefits from regular conditioning. Our BOLD 2-in-1 Pigment Activator & Nourishing Conditioner can also be used between colouring sessions to help keep your hair feeling soft and manageable.

Our biggest tip? Treat your colourful hair with a little extra TLC.

The better you care for your locks, the better your chances of keeping that gorgeous colour around for longer.

Will BOLD pigments stain my skin, clothing or bedding?

Like many semi-permanent hair colours, some colour transfer may occur, particularly during application, the first few washes or while your hair is wet.

Here's how to avoid turning everything you own into a matching hair accessory:

  • Wear protective gloves throughout mixing, application and rinsing.
  • Protect your surroundings by covering countertops, floors and nearby surfaces before getting started.
  • Use dark or old towels when drying freshly coloured hair.
  • Protect your pillowcases, particularly during the first few nights after colouring.
  • Keep wet hair away from clothing and furniture until it has dried completely.
  • Clean up spills immediately. The sooner you address a stain, the better your chances of removing it.

And a friendly warning: your favourite white pillowcase has absolutely no business being involved in your first few colour washes.

Consider it officially warned!

How can I fade my colour faster?

Already dreaming of your next colourful transformation? We love an evolving hair era!

Because BOLD pigments are semi-permanent, they gradually fade with washing. However, if you'd like to encourage the process along, there are a few things you can try.

  • 1. Wash your hair more frequently.

Regular shampooing can help gradually remove deposited pigment. Using lukewarm water instead of cold may also encourage colour to fade more quickly.

  • 2. Try a clarifying shampoo.

A clarifying shampoo may help remove some residual colour, particularly when used during the early stages of fading.

However, clarifying products can be drying, so avoid excessive use and follow with a suitable conditioner.

  • 3. Give it time.

Sometimes patience really is the best approach!

Certain shades can hold onto the hair longer than others, particularly when applied to highly porous, damaged or heavily pre-lightened hair.

  • 4. Speak to a professional before attempting major colour changes.

If you're planning to transition from one vibrant shade to another, a qualified colourist can help assess the remaining pigment and recommend an appropriate approach.

What NOT to do: Avoid harsh DIY colour-stripping methods involving household detergents, excessive bleaching or other potentially damaging combinations.

Remember, semi-permanent doesn't always mean completely removable in just a few washes.

Your next hair era can wait a little longer. Healthy hair is always worth prioritising!

Will all BOLD shades fade the same way?

Not necessarily! And this is something we think every colourful hair fairy should know.

Different pigments can behave differently depending on their colour composition and how they interact with your hair.

  • Some shades gradually fade into softer, more muted versions of themselves, while others may reveal different underlying tones as individual colour components fade.
  • For example, a vibrant purple may gradually appear more pink or blue-toned depending on the pigments in the mixture and your starting hair colour.

Several factors can influence how your shade fades:

  • Your starting hair level: Lighter and darker bases can produce different colour results and fading patterns.
  • Hair porosity: Highly porous hair may absorb pigments differently and can sometimes retain certain tones for longer.
  • Pigment concentration: Stronger mixtures may leave more noticeable residual colour.
  • Previous colour treatments: Existing pigments can influence both your initial result and how your colour changes over time.
  • Your haircare routine: Washing frequency, water temperature, products and heat styling can all affect colour longevity.

It's also worth remembering that even after a shade appears to have faded significantly, some residual pigment may remain in your hair.

This is particularly important when switching between contrasting colours.

Our advice? Always perform a strand test before introducing a completely new shade.

Because while we absolutely love a colourful surprise, we'd prefer it to be one you actually planned!

Pigments 101
What exactly is BOLD by Bella Monsoon?

Welcome to the colourful side of life!

BOLD by Bella Monsoon is our range of highly pigmented, semi-permanent hair colour powders, designed for anyone who loves expressing their personality through vibrant, creative hair colour.

Unlike traditional permanent hair dyes, BOLD pigments work by depositing colour onto your hair rather than chemically lightening your natural hair colour.

Our pigments come in powder form, allowing you to customise your colour by mixing them with conditioner or our specially formulated BOLD 2-in-1 Pigment Activator & Nourishing Conditioner.

What makes BOLD a little different?

  • Customisable colour intensity: Adjust the concentration of pigment in your mixture to create anything from softer shades to rich, vibrant colour.
  • Mixable shades: Combine different BOLD pigments to experiment with your very own signature colour.
  • Semi-permanent results: Enjoy colourful hair without the same long-term commitment as traditional permanent dyes, although some pigments can linger.
  • Conditioning application: Mix your pigments with a suitable conditioner or our dedicated Pigment Activator for a conditioning colour experience.
  • Creative freedom: Whether you're experimenting with highlights, an ombré, a colourful balayage or a full transformation, the possibilities are yours to explore.

For the most vibrant results, we recommend applying BOLD to an appropriately pre-lightened base, as your starting hair colour will influence the final outcome.

The philosophy behind BOLD is simple: life's too short for boring hair.

Your hair. Your rules. Be unapologetically YOU!

Is BOLD hair colour permanent?

Nope! Commitment issues? We understand.

Our pigments are semi-permanent and gradually fade with washing. As a general guideline, colour may fade over approximately 4–10 washes, but longevity depends on your starting hair colour, porosity, pigment concentration, washing frequency and aftercare.

It's also important to understand that semi-permanent doesn't always mean completely washable or instantly removable.

Certain pigments may leave residual colour, especially on porous, damaged or heavily pre-lightened hair.

Our advice? Always consider your starting shade and perform a strand test before colouring.

Will BOLD pigments damage my hair?

One of the lovely things about BOLD is that our pigments are designed to deposit colour without the chemical lightening process associated with traditional permanent hair dyes.

  • Our semi-permanent pigment powders don't require peroxide developers to activate the colour. Instead, they're mixed with conditioner or our BOLD 2-in-1 Pigment Activator & Nourishing Conditioner.
  • This means you can experiment with colourful hair without needing to use a bleaching agent as part of the pigment-mixing process.

However, there are a few important things to remember:

  • Colouring and lightening are different processes. Although BOLD pigments don't lighten your hair, achieving certain vibrant shades may require pre-lightening beforehand. Bleaching is a separate chemical treatment that can affect your hair's condition.
  • Every head of hair is different. Your hair's existing health, porosity and previous chemical treatments can influence how it responds to colouring.
  • Conditioning matters! Using a suitable conditioner or our specially formulated Pigment Activator helps create a conditioning mixture during application.
  • Always follow the instructions. Perform the recommended patch and strand tests, avoid applying colour to irritated or damaged skin, and discontinue use if irritation develops.

While BOLD avoids the chemical lightening process used by permanent colouring systems, no hair-colouring product can guarantee zero risk of irritation or unwanted effects.

Our philosophy? We love colourful hair, but looking after your locks is always part of the adventure!

Can I mix different BOLD shades together?

Absolutely! In fact, this is where things get deliciously creative.

  • One of our favourite features of BOLD is the ability to experiment with different pigment combinations to create your very own custom shades.
  • Want a deeper purple? A pink with a violet undertone? Or perhaps something entirely unique?
  • Your colour palette is yours to explore!

Here are a few tips to help you get started:

1. Start with small quantities.

Before mixing enough pigment for your entire head, experiment with smaller amounts to find a combination you love.

2. Understand your colour combinations.

Some shades blend beautifully, while others can create unexpected or muddy results.

For example, combining pink and purple pigments may produce a berry or magenta-inspired shade, depending on the pigments and proportions used.

3. Adjust your colour intensity.

Once you've chosen your pigment combination, mix it with conditioner or BOLD 2-in-1 Pigment Activator.

Adding more pigment generally creates a stronger, more concentrated mixture, while additional conditioner may help soften the shade.

4. Always perform a strand test.

Your starting hair colour can dramatically influence the outcome of your custom mixture.

Testing a small section first allows you to see how your chosen combination develops before committing to a full application.

5. Keep track of your formula!

Found your dream shade? Write down the approximate amounts of each pigment and conditioner used so you can recreate your masterpiece next time.

And remember, colour mixing is a little bit of science and a whole lot of creativity.

There are endless possibilities to experiment with, so have fun discovering the shades that make you feel most like YOU!

Products & Safety
What sizes are BOLD pigments available in?

Because one colourful hair adventure is never quite enough!

Our BOLD by Bella Monsoon semi-permanent hair pigment powders are available in two container sizes:

  • 150ml container: A great option for experimenting with a new shade, smaller colouring projects or refreshing sections of your hair.
  • 250ml container: Ideal for those who need more pigment, have longer or thicker hair, or simply can't get enough of their favourite shade!

A little clarification about sizing:

Our pigment powders are sold in containers measured by volume (ml), not weight (grams).

This means that a 150ml container does not necessarily contain 150g of pigment powder. The weight will depend on the powder's density.

The amount of pigment you'll need depends on your hair length, thickness, desired colour intensity and mixing ratio.

Not sure which size to choose? If you're planning a full-head transformation, it's always worth making sure you have enough pigment before beginning. Nobody wants to run out halfway through their main-character moment!

Explore our online store to see the available shades and sizes.

Are BOLD pigments suitable for everyone?

We believe colourful hair should be a form of self-expression, but product safety always comes first!

BOLD pigments are semi-permanent, deposit-only hair colours that do not require a peroxide developer or bleaching agent to deposit colour.

However, as with any cosmetic product, individual reactions and results can vary.

Here's what you should know before getting colourful:

  • Always perform a patch test. Follow the allergy testing instructions supplied with your product before each application, even if you've used hair colour before without any problems.
  • Perform a strand test. This helps you assess the final colour and how your hair responds before applying the product more widely.
  • Avoid irritated or damaged skin. Never apply hair colour to broken, inflamed or irritated skin.
  • Protect your eyes. BOLD pigments are intended for use on head hair. Avoid contact with your eyes and do not use the product to colour eyelashes or eyebrows.
  • Follow the product instructions. Use the recommended mixing ratios, application methods and processing times.
  • Discontinue use if irritation occurs. If you experience burning, itching, swelling or another unexpected reaction, stop using the product, rinse as directed and seek medical advice where appropriate.
